In March 1968 at one of his final speeches before his murder, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated:
“…this is America’s opportunity to help bridge the gulf between the haves and the have-nots. The question is whether America will do it. There is nothing new about poverty. What is new is that we now have the techniques and the resources to get rid of poverty. The real question is whether we have the will.”
When ABC was founded 60 years ago, our community was not yet courageous enough to honestly confront the causes of poverty. The narrative then, and sometimes still today, is that people made poor decisions, had deficient values and did not have the life skills or knowledge to raise children in a healthy environment.
