Action for a Better Community extends its sincerest condolences to the family of Daniel Prude on the loss of their loved one. Mr. Prude’s death is a tragedy in every sense of the word. We offer our support and are praying for the family during this time of unimaginable loss.
We understand that there are multiple investigations underway, but we are deeply troubled by the length of time that passed before the circumstances of Mr. Prude’s death were made public. We call upon our elected officials and their appointees to provide the community with a thorough explanation of how and why this happened. We urge the investigations be completed as quickly as possible so that all of the facts can be known by the family and the community.
From what has already been seen and heard, there is ample evidence to conclude that what happened to Mr. Prude reflects yet another systemic failure of mental health care and policing. These are failures we’ve seen far too many times in this country and they have deadly consequences at a disproportionate rate for people of color. Racism has once again proven to be a public health crisis!
We demand full accountability for those whose actions, in any way, contributed to the death of Mr. Prude or prevented the public from learning about the facts in this case in a timely fashion. Mr. Prude’s family and the Rochester community deserve a thorough explanation not only of how and why this happened, but what steps are being taken to prevent another family from facing a similar tragedy. Healing requires justice. Healing also requires change.
Additionally, ABC expresses its support for the protesters who have peacefully demonstrated about the death of Daniel Prude and others around the country who have died under similar circumstances. We encourage protesters to remain peaceful and calm, and we implore law enforcement to not use any type of force or intimidation tactics to deter these individuals from their right to peacefully assemble and call for justice for Mr. Prude.
