Johnson, Jr.

Opening Keynote on January 8th

William A. Johnson Jr., the first African American mayor of Rochester, New York, was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on August 22, 1942. He attended Howard University from 1961 to 1967, completing Bachelor's and Master’s degrees in Political Science and Government in 1967. This education laid a strong foundation for his future, allowing him to explore policy, social justice, and governance issues. Before entering politics, Johnson served 23 years with the Urban League. His first two years were as the Deputy Executive Director of the branch in Flint, Michigan. In December of 1972, he moved to Rochester, New York, and spent the next 21 years as President and CEO of that city’s Urban League.

Simeon Banister, a Rochester native, began his tenure as president and CEO of Rochester Area Community Foundation on Oct. 1, 2022. Banister’s career before the Foundation spanned public and private sectors and included the New York State Senate, state Department of Taxation and Finance, the State University of New York, and several private commercial real estate firms.

Myers-Small is a nationally recognized executive leader, educator, and advocate with more than two decades of experience advancing equity, accountability, and community empowerment across government, education, and nonprofit sectors. She currently serves as Executive Director of the Rochester Police Accountability Board, the City’s civilian oversight agency established by voter-approved charter amendment, where she leads efforts to strengthen transparency, public trust, and community-centered approaches to accountability.

Bryan Hetherington retired from Empire Justice Center, where he served as Chief Counsel.  Previously, he was Chief Counsel at the Public Interest Law Office of Rochester, which he founded, prior to its merger into Empire Justice Center.  He came to Rochester in 1980 as Litigation Director of Monroe County Legal Assistance Corp.

Dr. Ashley Cross is the Founding Executive Director of HOPE585, a Rochester-based nonprofit transforming the child welfare landscape in Monroe County by mobilizing the community to keep families together. Under her leadership, HOPE585 was recognized as the 2025 Systems Change Awardee by Roc the Future. The organization leads initiatives such as the CarePortal, which connects CPS-involved families and youth to urgently needed resources, and the Reimagine Initiative, which builds community-driven alternatives that narrow the front door to child welfare. Rooted in a relationship-centered approach, HOPE585 provides mentorship, case management, and wraparound support for youth and families impacted by poverty and the foster system.

He has worked closely with a wide array of diverse government, corporate, academic, nonprofit, and community organizations.

Her commitment to exceptional care, coupled with a drive to strengthen services and empower employees, helped fuel the agency’s growth and her development as a leader. She has served as president & C.E.O. since 2013. Under her leadership, Heritage Christian has grown revenue by more than 150% and consistently earns a place on the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce Top 100 list. HCS also remains one of only four Compass-designated organizations statewide—a recognition it has held since 2002 for outstanding quality.

Board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Dr. Harris has more than 28 years of experience in clinical practice. She is a certified Physician Executive through the American College of Physician Executives and fellow with both the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics. In her current role, she oversees medical services for the health plan.

She served as Associate Chair of Diversity, Inclusion, Culture, Equity, and Integration in the Department of Psychiatry and was the founding director of the Medicine-in-Psychiatry Services at URMC and Lazos Fuertes; a culturally responsive mental health program serving the Spanish language community.

Community service has been the guiding force throughout Josie’s career. In 1995, she joined the Monroe County Clerk’s office, where she earned several promotions before being invited to join Monroe County Executive Adam Bello’s administration in 2020. Josie currently serves as Monroe County’s Chief Community Engagement Officer.

Under her leadership, Enlace has become a vital hub for coordinating comprehensive services and resources to support farmworkers and migrants as they navigate life in our community.

Mitch Gruber is the Chief Impact Officer at Foodlink, the regional food bank, a member of the Rochester City Council, and a Professor of Political Science at the University of Rochester. In all of his work, Mitch aims to leverage Rochester’s assets to build healthier communities.

Mitch is a proud board member of Action for a Better Community, and a former ABC Head Start Teacher. He has a PhD in History from the UR, where he studied the history of food retail in urban America.
