Description of Services:
The Tech Jobs for Youth (TJFY) program is a 10 week internship program that provides young adults with an opportunity to work in a technology and PC refurbishing environment. Participants are also provided job readiness training and referrals to agencies that can assist them in their job search effort during and after the program has ended. The Tech Jobs for Youth (TJFY) program was previously supported by federal stimulus grant funding administered through Action for a Better Community, Inc. The program is currently seeking funding in order to offer additional programs to deserving youth.
The internship program is designed to provide a blend of formal training and hands-on work experience. The instructors and supervisors are experienced IT professionals who bring their real life professional work experiences into the classroom and work environment. Since the instructor to student ratio is low, the interns benefit from one-on-one coaching and mentoring. Additionally, they have the opportunity to work closely with Micrecycle employees and volunteers in the day-to-day operations of a professional work environment. The successful student will have the knowledge to identify technology and computer hardware basics, compatibility issues and common errors, software installation and functions, security risks and prevention, as well as Green IT and preventative maintenance practices. The interns gain hands on experience by working with volunteers and other employees of the Micrecycle PC refurbishing business.
The mission of Micrecycle is to provide computers for education. Micrecycle refurbishes donated equipment to supply high-quality, affordable computers to families, schools and community organizations.
Target Population / Eligibility Criteria:
The TJFY program is focused on low-income, unemployed or under-employed young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who are seeking an opportunity to start an exciting career in technology.
