Albert J. Simone
Dr. Albert J. Simone became president of Rochester Institute of Technology in September 1992. He was the eighth president in the university's 178-year history and formerly president of the University of Hawaii System and chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
At RIT, Dr. Simone was responsible for one of the nation's leading career-oriented universities with 15,500-students, 2,800 faculty and staff, an annual operating budget of more than $492 million, and an endowment of more than $580 million.
Dr. Simone is the recipient of numerous honors, including: The 2007 recipient of the Chief Executive Leadership Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE); Rochester Business Alliance Civic Award (2006), Friends of Business and Workforce Award, RochesterWorks! (2006); Entrepreneurial American Leadership Award from Partners for Livable Communities, Washington, D.C., (2006); Rochester Rotary Award (2004); Catholic Family Center Award (2004); Rochester International Council International Citizen Award (2004); Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award (2003); the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP) President's Award (2001); the Robert Schuman Award (2000); the Henrietta Area Community Outstanding Citizen Award (2000); the Jewish National Fund's highest honor, the Tree of Life Award, for humanitarian reasons and outstanding community involvement (1996); and The Order of the Croatian Star with the Effigy of Antun Radic, the highest medal that the President of Croatia can bestow (2007).
He received his B.A. in Economics from Tufts University and his Ph.D. in Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He holds Honorary Doctorate Degrees from Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan, Gallaudet University, and St. John Fisher College. Dr. Simone has taught at Tufts, MIT, Northeastern University, Boston College, Boston University, University of Cincinnati, and the University of Hawaii. He served as Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati from 1972-83.
He is or has been active with a variety of community organizations covering a broad range of interests in human services, higher education, business and technology. Mr. Simone was involved in the City of Rochester Mayor’s Biracial Partnership for Community Progress Program (2001-2002); and has served as Honorary Chairman of the Salvation Army's Help-the-Homeless Weekend (1997); Co-chairperson of the Athena Awards Committee (1998); and as Honorary Chair of Hunter’s Hope Candlelight Ball (2004).
Carolie Simone
Originally a New Jersey girl, Carolie grew up in a music loving family, learning to play piano and organ. She graduated from Tufts University and briefly taught elementary school before starting her family with husband, Al. With a son and three daughters, she branched out into things Moms do: Brownie/Girl Scout leader, art lecture lady for the elementary school, PTA president, coordinator for a three-state band competition for the High School music program, and even local reporter for Cincinnati, Ohio’s boy’s baseball league; Knothole Baseball, comprised of 120 teams. Carolie perfected the art of how to write-up a rousing win without disheartening the losing team, and became versatile in the unusual skill of how to list fly balls to the outfield in about fifty or sixty ways.
Marriage to Al transported Carolie from Massachusetts to Cincinnati, OH, to Hawaii.
Living in Hawaii offered numerous trips to Asian countries (even including North Korea), an exotic Fourth of July evening on an aircraft carrier, and tea ceremonies at the Japanese consulate. Love of environmental preservation led her to membership in and president of a group called The Outdoor Circle.
