Summary:

The Green Institute is an environmental non-profit, focused on advancing practical

innovations that sustain our community and the environment. The Green Institute emerged out of a

neighborhood dispute over the environmental impact of a garbage transfer station on a low-income

community of renters. For sixteen years, it has developed on-the-ground solutions to reducing waste

and solving the energy crisis, with an emphasis on community empowerment. The Green Institute is

essentially an umbrella organization, under which operate programs including Community Energy, the

ReUse Center, Deconstruction Services and the Metro Clean Energy Resource Team (CERT).

We believe energy saving products should be an affordable option for everyone and not a luxury.

Studies indicate that many third-party decision-makers, such as landlords and contractors, remain

focused on reducing installation costs with little consideration for long-term energy savings. Due to its

established reputation as a player in the green building and affordable building industry, the ReUse

Center is uniquely positioned to reach a market of decision makers (contractors, DIYers, small

businesses, etc.) that could affect the incorporation of sustainability and energy conservation measures.

The Green Institute is seeking interns to assist in surveying and reaching out within the Twin Cities

Metro, with a strong focus on marginalized groups, to research and test low cost conservation/energy

efficient products available on the market today and to exercise energy saving and carbon offset tracking

tools.

Summary of Position:

The intern will help to develop an energy conservation product line at the ReUse Center within an

established salvaged building materials exchange. The position is intended for students interested in

sustainability and business planning and development.

Dates of Positions:

Fall Semester: September-December

Time Commitment:

10-20 hrs/ week
