Dear Friends of ABC:

“Where poverty concentrates, schools struggle, crime rates tend to be higher and physical and mental health worsens.” Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, 11.6.11.

Each day the news brings to light the stunning statistics that accompany the current economic downturn and its devastating effects on so many people living in need.

In Rochester, 26,000 children (51% of the population) join 10,500 more children in the outlying suburbs of Monroe County who live under dire economic conditions. The population of numbers of people living below the Federal Poverty Level in Rochester increased in just one year by 17.5%, and in Monroe County suburbs that percentage rose to an astonishing 25%.  Monroe County statistics calculate 110,000 of its residents live below the Federal Poverty Level.

These are harsh circumstances.  But in this season of giving, there is hope.

As Monroe County’s ‘go-to’ Community Action Partnership agency since 1965, Action for a Better Community stands ready to serve this rapidly growing population.  Join the Friends of ABC and become part of our vital work to help people in Monroe County achieve successful, independent lives.

Not a hand-out, but a helping hand-up.  Each year, ABC assists more than 20,000 individuals. Through our programs and services, newborns, seniors, veterans, youth and families acquire the skills they need to become strong and independent.  Partner with us to give those we care about the tools to step up the ladder to self-sufficiency.
